Progressive memory loss, dementia, and related cognitive dysfunction states have become a serious medical and social problem in Western societies. According to the U.S. National Institute on Aging, in the United States alone there are as many as four million cases of the most extreme form of cognitive breakdown. With the increasing population of people over the age of 50, concern for dementia, cognitive malfunction and other related diseases has become understandable.

Studies have shown that vinpocetine can be a powerful cognitive enhancement product. It is a vasodilator and thus can increase blood flow to the brain, as well as potentially improving the brain’s use of oxygen, thus enabling brain cells to continue functioning, even when oxygen supplies are cut off. Vinpocetine has also been found to stimulate noradrenergic neurons in an area of the brain called the locus coeruleus. Noradrenergic neurons affect the function of the cerebral cortex—the part of the brain used to think, plan, and act. The number of these neurons declines with age, impairing concentration, alertness, and the speed with which information is processed. It may also have anticonvulsant action, which may be linked to its neuronal protective capacity and/or its modulation of several chemical transmitter systems. It can also increase cerebral metabolism and raise ATP levels in nerve cells.
